While technology is the new age go-to for kids, A TV screen or computer game proves to be far less effective than old-fashion playtime for their developmental milestones. Kids are curious explorers fascinated by objects, shapes, sounds and all things tangible. Back in the day most of us were technologically inept and the outdoors was our modern-day Candy Crush. Research indicates, although the current generation is raised in a tech world, a reverse effect is noted. The novelty of blinking lights on a racecar or computer games quickly wear off and kids are far more intrigued by toys that are mentally stimulating. Trends such as the Fidget Spinner die down quickly, and old school favourites like a Fun Frisbee or skipping rope has provided entertainment for hours for many years. Board games and puzzles not only put less strain on their eyes, but they are perfect bonding tools for family time during winter. Did you know a yo-yo still exists? Did you know they help improve hand and eye co-ordination? You may want to introduce your kids to this “thing on a string”. Great emphasis is placed on academic success, and while this will help kids advance, playtime is as important. It allows them to experience things and identify their interests. Learning through play can be achieved by colouring in or puzzle blocks in different shapes and sizes. Playtime, according to research is a fundamental building block in a child’s life and should be encouraged daily. Allowing kids to experience and experiment with old school toys in a tech driven world will feed their imagination and fosters independence.
